Frequently Asked Questions
How many practices will there be?
Practice schedules depend on coach and field availability. Most teams will practice 2–3 times per week before games begin, then typically 1–2 times per week once games start. Your team's manager will communicate the practice schedule after teams are formed.
Will there be assessments or tryouts?
Recreation League: Player assessments will only be held if a division has enough players to form multiple teams. Assessments help us create balanced teams and are not tryouts. There are no assessments for the 6U division.
Select: Select teams will hold separate tryouts. Tryout dates will be announced after registration.
Can I request a specific coach or teammate?
You may submit a request during registration, and we will do our best to accommodate it. However, requests cannot be guaranteed, as our priority is creating balanced teams.
What days are games played?
Games are typically played:
- Tuesdays and/or Thursdays
- Saturdays
Game schedules may vary slightly by division and field availability.
What division does my daughter play in?
SDYSA follows USA Softball age eligibility guidelines. Players are placed based on their birthdate.
- 6U: September 1, 2019 – August 31, 2021
- 8U: September 1, 2017 – August 31, 2019
- 10U: September 1, 2015 – August 31, 2017
- 12U: September 1, 2013 – August 31, 2015
- 14U: September 1, 2011 – August 31, 2013
Can my daughter play up an age division?
Yes. Please indicate on your registration if you would like your player to be evaluated for an older division. Playing up is subject to an evaluation and league approval to ensure the placement is appropriate.
Does my daughter need softball experience?
No! Our Recreation League welcomes players of all experience levels, from first-time players to experienced athletes. Fall Ball is a great opportunity to learn the game, improve skills, and have fun.
When will teams be announced?
Teams will be formed after registration closes and any necessary assessments have been completed. Families will be contacted by their team manager before practices begin.
When will assessment dates, Select tryouts, and uniform fittings be announced?
Assessment dates, Select tryout dates, and uniform fitting dates will be announced after registration closes. Updates will be shared on our website, social media pages, and by email.
Can my daughter play another sport during Fall Ball?
Yes! Many of our players participate in multiple sports during the fall. We simply ask that families communicate any scheduling conflicts with their coach as early as possible.
How can I volunteer?
We are a volunteer-run league and are always looking for help! Volunteer opportunities include coaching, team parent, snack bar, field preparation, scorekeeping, and more. More information will be provided before the season begins.
What is Select?
Our Select Program is designed for players looking for additional competition while still enjoying the benefits of our recreational league. Select teams compete against other local leagues and typically have additional practices and games throughout the season.
Players interested in Select will participate in a tryout. If selected, families will have two participation options:
- Select Only: Your player will participate exclusively on the Select team.
- Recreation + Select: Your player will participate on both a Recreation League team and a Select team, allowing them to enjoy the recreational season while also competing in Select games.
Additional fees will apply for players participating in both programs.
Select is a great opportunity for players looking to further develop their skills, compete against strong competition, and continue growing their game while remaining part of the SDYSA community.
